MAB Digest 13. PREFACE About this series, The MAB Digest Series was launched by UNESCO in 1989. Several types of publications are included: distillations of the substantive findings of MAB activities ; overviews of recent, ongoing and planned activities within MAB in particular subject or problem areas; and proposals for new research activities. The target audience varies from one digest to another. Some are designed with planners and policy-makers as the main audience in mind. Others are aimed at collaborators in the MAB Programme. Still others have technical personnel and research workers as the target, irrespective of whether or not they are involved in MAB. This digest outlines policy recommendations and proposals on savanna land use. They have been prepared as a contribution to promoting the management of the world's savannas in ways that are more environmentally sustainable, economically profitable and socially equitable than at present. The primary audience is those who shape, move and implement policies which affect savanna land use. The digest represents one output from an international workshop held at UNEP Headquarters in Nairobi (Kenya) from 23-26 January 1991, around the theme of Economic Driving Forces and Ecological Constraints in Savanna Land Use. A joint initiative of IUBS, UNESCO, UNEP and the Commission of European Communities, the workshop was organized as one of several synthesis activities of the collaborative IUBS-MAB programme on Responses of Savannas to Stress and Disturbance (RSSD). The workshop also related to activities within the MAB research orientation on 'Human investment and Resource use' with its focus on issues at the interface of the policy goals of Environmental integrity, Economic efficiency and Equity (Young and Ishwaran 1989).
